By approaching his subject in this way Klein refuses to indulge in photography as the fetishized outcome of an un-witnessed performance or event. Instead, he creates work that embodies the very processes from which such conclusions are normally drawn. Playing with appearances he mixes mediums and metaphors to literally stitch his tableaus together from the stuff of reality and dreams: Coyotes encircle the queen of pop with feral menace and failed Beuysian communication; the wedding dress burning in eternal flame brings ceremonial immolation to the passage of purity; organs respond to the contortions of their neighbors pulsing messages across the stillness. Each is locked in its own irreconcilable reality, brought in as nothing more than an element in the overall composition. Each is reconstituted within a vision that post-produces the idea into a state of exhaustive difficulty. The result is a strange and fractured landscape, a form of collaboration that looks not to the glare of publicity but to the twilight of the idols. There it inhabits a darkened space where performance and art merge to create an iconography of their own. Klein probes beneath the celebrity skin to create images for which manifest content and latent meaning are held in perpetual conflict. And for all the seductions of surface, his is a subcutaneous view that literally digs beneath the surface to portray the muscular and emotional tension underneath - exposing, if you want, the beast within. Tapping into the deeper currents of libidinal energy that flow through the pop persona he worries the stasis of the photograph into a state of convulsive and animated beauty.
